The village of Borden, Saskatchewan has a single ex Saskatchewan Wheat Pool grain elevator. This elevator has an integrated annex and a steel bin.
In 1985 there were three grain elevators in Borden – a Saskatchewan Wheat Pool elevator and an ex? UGG elevator, with a green Cargill elevator between them (Flickr photo).
Borden is named after Sir Frederick William Borden, who was the Minister of Militia and Defence immediately prior to World War I. He was the cousin of the eighth Prime Minister of Canada, Robert Borden.
Historic Borden Photos
In 1959, Borden had five grain elevators, as shown in this great aerial photograph by H.D. McPhail, used with permission. From top to bottom: UGG, National, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool “B”, UGG, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool “A”.
The National elevator was a Canadian Consolidated elevator in this photo.
By 1982, the National elevator had become a Cargill elevator, and the “A” elevator and the adjacent UGG elevator were gone.
In June 1982, an unknown photographer recorded the three grain elevators in Borden, SK. The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool “B” elevator had one annex. The Cargill elevator had at least two annexes, while the UGG grain elevator had a long driveway and one balloon annex.
Note the grain boxcar “doors” stacked up in front of the two cylindrical grain cars by the UGG elevator.
